Opposite forces are acting on the mining workforce. On one side, tens of thousands of people will retire from mining over the next decade, taking their skill, experience and in-depth knowledge with them as they leave. On the other is the race to attract new workers to the sector. Numerous factors, including a negative perception of the industry, concern about social and environmental issues, job instability bought on by commodity cycles and downturns, and competition from other sectors, are barriers to attracting the replacement workers the sector needs.
